Aging Studies Program
The Maxwell School's Aging Studies Program is housed in the Center for Policy Research (CPR), of which Douglas Wolf was the interim director. The Aging Studies Program encompasses the aging policy research activities of the University Gerontology Center (directed by Janet Wilmoth). Forging a cooperative arrangement between the University Gerontology Center and the Center for Policy Research has allowed the Maxwell School to create a center of excellence in the research and teaching of policy issues related to the economics and demography of aging that has achieved national and international recognition.
A new initiative of the Gerontology Center is The
Center for Aging and
Policy Studies
(CAPS) at Syracuse University, founded in July 2009 with
support from the National Institute on
Aging.
It is one of 14 centers funded through NIA's Demography and
Economics of Aging Centers program. CAPS encourages,
supports, and disseminates interdisciplinary and
policy-relevant research centered in demography and
economics of aging.
Our work emphasizes direct policy relevance. The major goal of our research and teaching efforts is to provide the foundation for an informed and balanced discussion of policy issues related to an aging society. We disseminate the findings of our research and related policy analyses to a broad audience of relevant experts, public officials, and leaders in the private sector.
We also use cross-national studies, both cross-sectional and longitudinal, in our analyses to compare the experiences of other countries to better understand our own.
Furthermore, we are increasingly turning to the interpretation and interaction of highly interrelated elements of aging — economic, demographic and health — rather than focusing on one or two of these elements at the expense of others.
