2002 Summer Workshop

Introducing Public Policy Issues in Aging into the Curriculum

June 23-27, 2002
Syracuse University

Sixteen professors from around the country gathered in Syracuse to explore ways in which the discussion of public policy issues in aging could be increased in college courses. The participants represented a wide range of fields including sociology, social work, women's studies, human development, economics, gerontology, and social science.

Presentations by leading researchers in aging included Timothy Smeeding (Syracuse) on policy analysis, health policy for an aging society; and economics. Robert Hudson (Boston University) on political science; Chris Himes (Syracuse), and Doug Wolf (Syracuse) on sociology and demography; Judith Gonyea (Boston University) on aging and women's studies; Eric Kingson (Syracuse) on social security reform.  Presentations were also given by Patricia Cianciolo (Northern Michigan University) on making use of workshop resources; as well as John Krout (Ithaca College) on other programs in aging.  Participants were also introduced to ways of searching for aging material on the Internet by Martha Bonney from the Center for Policy Research. When possible, these presentations are available for downloading through the agenda listed below.

In addition to formal presentations, participants discussed ways of increasing student enrollment in aging courses, methods of integrating aging material into other courses, teaching techniques and practices, and other resources for teaching and research. At the end of the workshop, small groups of participants presented teaching outlines for course modules in International / Cross Cultural; Race, Class, Gender, and Health; Retirement and Economic Well-Being; Long-Term Care and Intergenerational Issues. As with previous attendees, we intend to follow up with these participants and assess how they used their experiences and lessons from this workshop and incorporate them into their curricula.
