Highlights of Graduate Student Research & Training

Nadia Greenhalgh-Stanley, a fourth year doctoral student in Economics and a CPR Graduate Research Associate was awarded,for the 2008-2009 school year, a Dissertation Fellowship from the Center for Retirement Research at Boston College, funded through a grant from the U.S. Social Security Administration. Her main research focus is on housing behavior and financial wealth decisions among the elderly. 

Her first paper titled “Medicaid and the Housing and Asset Decisions of the Elderly: Evidence from Estate Recovery Programs”, investigates the role of Medicaid and its’ estate recovery counterpart on housing behavior and bequest motives among the elderly. She presented these findings this year at an SU Graduate Economics Dissertation Workshop.  Her second paper investigates the impact of the Spousal Impoverishment laws of the Medicare Catastrophic Coverage Act of 1988 on financial assets among widows.

Nadia’s primary advisor is Gary Engelhardt.  In 2004, she graduated summa cum laude from Wittenberg University with a B.A. in Economics.

For 12 years, throughout her academic career, Nadia was a competitive figure skater and finished her career two levels below the Olympic level.   She expects to complete her Ph.D. in May 2009.
